Glimet is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus that has not responded to diet therapy and previous treatment with sulfonylurea derivatives or biguanides, in addition to other agents that affect blood sugar levels by mouth.
Glimet stimulates insulin secretion by lowering the threshold for stimulation of pancreatic cells by glucose, increases insulin sensitivity and its ability to bind to target cells, increases insulin secretion, enhances the effect of insulin on glucose absorption by muscles and liver, and prevents lipolysis in adipose tissue.
